    Description

Did you ever wish you could decipher the meaning of the beautiful symbols on your Chinese Art?   Now you can, with this vintage 1945 Chinese Symbol Art Poster, explaining the Name and Meaning of 160 Chinese Symbols. I found it in my grandparents' estate boxes but had never seen it before and do not know where or when they acquired it.
The title of the poster is "CHINESE ART SYMBOLS".  The upper right corner is marked "Oriental Culture Chart #12A,Compiled and Published by W. M. Hawley".
The upper left corner says "Gift of an Art Object carries with it the wish for the Good Fortune implied by the Symbols thereon. The Symbols given on this chart are representative forms, though many variations exist.  In the descriptions below, the Symbolism is given in Italics."
The lower right corner is marked "Copyright 1945, W. M.Hawley, Hollywood 46, Calif.".
The top 3/4 of the poster shows the 160 Symbols, with their Chinese and American Names.  The bottom 1/4 of the poster gives a short description of the Meaning of each of the 160 Symbols.
For example:  Symbol #1 is called "Yang Yin" in Chinese, and "Dual Principle" in English.  The description below says "1. YANG is related to Light, Male, Heaven, Sun, Vigor.  YIN is related to Dark, Female, Earth, Moon, Passiveness."
The poster was cleanly folded into fourths and stored flat in a box.  As folded it measures approximately 9" x 11".  When opened up, it measures approximately 17.5" x 22.5".
The poster is in Excellent condition, with no markings, pin holes, tears, or creases (other than the afore-mentioned folds, which are visible in the photos).
If you don't already have this item, it will be a fun and useful addition to your vintage Chinese Calligraphy or Chinese Symbols collection. Or frame it, and use it as a piece of art itself!
